Hello dreamy umbrella, cherry & piña. You make me wanna swoop off to a tropical beach!

Here are your cast of characters:

  1. I wanted to put Teeling Small Batch with…
  2. Apricot Liqueur cause it’s warm and sunny out. #happiness
  3. I knew the Orange Flower and Almond notes in Orgeat Syrup would go well with Apricot.
  4. Lastly, Lemon Juice for acid, length, and to balance the sweetness.

This combination of flavors was also inspired by two classic cocktails: an Army & Navy and a Colonel Cocktail (1937 version: Whiskey, Apricot Liqueur, Grapefruit, Simple Syrup).

The name of the drink is an homage to the two cocktails mentioned above, except that the commanding officer in question is on holiday. The Captain has left the ship, is headed to a deserted island, and is on leave. Don’t call, he won’t pick up the phone.

  • 1 3/4 oz Teeling Small Batch Irish Whiskey
  • 1/4 oz Rothman and Winter Apricot Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Orgeat
  • 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
  • Garnish: Tiki Umbrella, Pineapple Chunk, Maraschino Cherry

Combine ingredients over ice and shakity-shake-shake. Strain into double rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish. Tiki time.

I was totally ready to share a stirred drink with y’all, when suddenly it snowed again here in Brooklyn! This change of weather has me feeling pressed to post another Tiki The Snow Away drink (and this one uses Templeton Rye ). MAY THE GODS FAVOR US WITH BETTER WEATHER!

Seriously though, doesn’t the sight of this drink make you wanna get on a plane to Central America/Hawaii/The Caribbean/Southern California? Me too.

Here are your cast of characters:

  1. If y’all can’t tell, I’m on a bit of a Templeton Rye kick: “The Good Stuff” is so smooth and plays so well with others. It works extra well with Rum!
  2. Speaking of Rum: Smith & Cross + Templeton Rye is a great split base. Highly recommend.
  3. Orgeat, Piña, Lemon: These three make for a really killer Tiki “punch base”
  4. Bittermens Elemakule Tiki Bitters: Tiki in a bottle. Seriously, the spices are perfect.

The name of this one is a play on the fact that Al Capone was obsessed with Templeton Rye during his bootlegging days. I imagine that Capone took a vacation to the Caribbean, and though surrounded by Rum, still couldn’t get Templeton out of his head.

  • 1 3/4 oz Templeton Rye
  • 3/4 oz Smith & Cross Navy Strength Jamaica Rum
  • 3/4 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 3/4 oz Lemon Juice
  • 3/4 oz Orgeat*
  • 10 drops Bittermen’s Elemakule Tiki Bitters
  • Garnish: Pineapple Spear Bunny Ears, pineapple chunk, Luxardo Maraschino Cherry

Combine ingredients over ice and short shake. Strain into tall Tiki Mug over crushed ice and garnish.

*Every Orgeat is different, adjust according to the sweetness of your Orgeat.

Here are your cast of characters: Yaguara Cachaça, Surf Girl Trio of Denizen Aged White Rum, Senior Blue Curaçao, Coco Lopez, Velvet Falernum, Piña, and Lime.

But now for a deeper dive cause hot damn, these three go together so well!

  1. Yaguara Cachaça: as previously stated, I’m head over heels for this stuff. As far as Surf Girl goes, those tropical fruit, coconut, banana, and grassy/funky notes in the Cachaça just kill it with the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Denizen Aged White Rum: Yaguara goes so well with the banana & grassy/funky notes in Denizen! Synergy!
  3. Falernum: dude, these three ingredients are magic together! SERIOUSLY MAGIC. The spiced vanilla and lime notes + two sets of Banana, grasses, funk, strawberries.

  • 1 1/2 oz Yaguara Cachaça
  • 1 oz Denizen Aged White Rum
  • 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 1/2 oz Coco Lopez

  • 3/4 oz Lime Juice
  • ~6 oz Crushed Ice
  • Garnish: Tiki umbrella, Maraschino cherry, Pineapple

Combine ingredients and blend for 7 seconds. Pour in a 10 oz Surf Girl Tiki Mug and garnish.

To the Surf Girl trio of Denizen Aged White, Senior Blue Curaçao, and Coco Lopez we add Passion fruit! Yea! It really adds a unique tartness in a way that Lime alone just can’t achieve. Lastly, Pineapple gives a great backbone and plays so well with the rest of the ingredients.

  • 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 1/2 oz Coconut Cream
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice*
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz Passion Fruit Syrup
  • ~8 oz Crushed Ice
  • Garnish: Tiki umbrella, Maraschino cherry, pineapple

Combine ingredients and blend for 7 seconds. Pour in a 10 oz Surf Girl Tiki Mug and garnish.

*Always unsweetned, 100% Pineapple Juice not from concentrate. This is critical or the drink will be too sweet.

Cast of Characters: Since this is a Cali Surf Girl, I decided to give it some Cali style ingredients like: Corralejo Tequila Blanco and Coconut Water. The Surf Girl trio of Denizen Aged White Rum, Blue Curaçao, and Coco Lopez remains intact and is joined by Lime Juice and a lil pink salt.

I’m also keeping the garnishes the same so as to have continuity between all the Surf Girl drinks.

Oh and plug your blender in and grab a bunch of ice!

Cali Surf Girl

  • 1 1/2 oz Blanco Tequila
  • 1 oz Denizen Aged White Rum
  • 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 3/4 oz Lime Juice
  • 3/4 oz Coconut Water
  • 1/2 oz Coconut Cream
  • Pinch of Salt
  • * 1/4 oz Simple Syrup
  • ~8 oz Crushed Ice
  • Garnish: Tiki umbrella, Maraschino Cherry, Pineapple

Combine ingredients and blend for 7 seconds. Pour in a 10 oz Surf Girl Tiki Mug and garnish.

*You may or may not want this. You’re working with a lot of ice and typically have to make blended drinks sweeter than shaken or stirred drinks.

I’ve tasted Cachaça before, had a Caipirinha or two, but I’ve never been truly excited about this spirit until now. Yaguara is by far the best, smoothest, and tastiest of Cachaças with notes of Banana, Strawberry, Coconut, a bit of grassy funk, and a whole lot of YASSSS GURRRRL.

It’s divine and I’m putting it in everything I possibly can, including the following drink.

Here are your cast of characters: Yaguara Cachaça, Grand Marnier, Orgeat, Lemon Juice.

  • 1 1/2 oz Yaguara Cachaça
  • 1/2 oz Grand Marnier*
  • 3/4 oz Orgeat**
  • 3/4 oz Lemon Juice
  • Garnish: the biggest Mint bouquet of all time

Combine ingredients over ice and shake like a rocket. Strain into double Rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with the biggest Mint bouquet of all time.

*Magically enough, dry Curaçao works just as well at 1/2 oz.

**Every Orgeat is different, some sweeter, some more dry, adjust accordingly.

Happy National Bootlegger’s Day to all you scoundrels and scallywags. To celebrate, I’ve made a Tiki The Snow Away drink with Templeton Rye and yes, it’s REALLY DAMN TASTY.

Today, January 17th marks the birthday of Templeton Rye and its most famous patron, Al Capone. Back during Prohibition, an enterprising group of farmers from Templeton, Iowa began secretly making some really killer Whiskey. Soon afterwards, “The Good Stuff” as it was called by those in the know, made its way into the hands of Al Capone whose bootlegging network helped Templeton reach many a dry mouth.

Since it’s Winter and I’m in total-Tiki mode, I thought I’d pay homage with a Tiki-Rye drink. The inspiration for this cocktail comes from Blood Oranges (SEASONAL Y’ALL) and how well they pair with Rye Whiskey.

Here are your cast of characters: Templeton Rye, Jägermeister (such excellent spice), Cinnamon Bark Syrup (goes really well with Blood Orange), the aforementioned Blood Orange, Lemon Juice, and of course a Luxardo Maraschino cherry.

Since this is the reddest drink I’ve ever made, and I’ve got the Cherry positioned like a setting sun in the circular sky, the name “Red Sunset” hit me like a flash. If only all drink names were so easy and so…obvious.

  • 2 oz Templeton Rye
  • 1/4 oz Jägermeister
  • 1/4 oz Cinnamon Bark Syrup
  • 1 oz Blood Orange Juice
  • 1/4 oz Lemon Juice*
  • Garnish: Blood orange wheel, Luxardo Maraschino Cherry speared with Tiki Umbrella.

Combine ingredients over ice and short shake. Strain into double rocks glass or short Tiki mug over crushed ice and garnish.

*Needed the extra tart-acidity to balance the sweetness of the Blood Oranges.

Howdy, has anyone gone outside and had their eyelashes freeze yet? Been caught in a snow drift? Gotten a bloody nose from the dry-as-hell air? Fear not, for we have Tiki The Snow Away drinks to give you life here at  Home Bar Girl. FEAR NOT Y’ALL.

The inspiration for today’s drink is that totally fabulous, amazingly spiced, magical Sukkah Hill Spirits Besamim Liqueur. If you haven’t tried it or read my review, just know that it’s like if your grandma put all of her baking spices in a Liqueur. Hell yes to that. I wanted to put it in a Tiki drink cause Sugar Cane Spirit + Spices + Citrus = hot damn.

Here are the ingredients: Besamim Liqueur, Batavia-Arrack van Oosten, Denizen Merchant’s Reserve (currently my fave Rum), Pineapple Juice, and Lime Juice. I wanted to put Besamim with the Arrack cause I knew that they’d make an unstoppable combo. I was right. I’ve added Merchant’s Reserve for depth, viscosity, and funk.

If you’re asking, “Grrrrrl, what’s with the name of this drink? Are monks going to come after me in the night and haunt me after I drink this?” POSSIBLY. I WON’T DENY THAT IT’S POSSIBLE! (Good luck with the hangover if you have too many.)

But seriously now, History! In the 16th century, English and Dutch sailors were trying to out-do each other in South East Asia. In the 17th century, they found a strange spirit called Arak/Rak/Arrack, distilled from sugar cane and fermented with red rice. They started making Punch with it and the predecessor to the “cocktail” was effectively born. I have named this drink in honor of the Gregorian period, the thrust of English Naval exploration.

  • 1 1/2 oz Sukkah Hill Besamim Liqueur
  • 1 1/2 oz Batavia-Arrack van Oosten
  • 1/2 oz Denizen Merchant’s Reserve Rum
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • Garnish: Pineapple, Maraschino Cherry, Tiki umbrella

Combine ingredients over ice and short shake. Double strain into rocks glass or short Tiki mug and garnish.

This is both my first time making a Tiki coffee-cocktail and my first time photographing the “Nudie Mug”. Isn’t it a nice Nudie Mug? How luscious her currrrrves. How excellently sculpted her handle. Thank you Nudie Mug.

  • 2 oz DD’s Spiced Rum
  • 1/2 oz cold Espresso (sub Cold Brew Coffee)
  • 1/2 oz Coco Lopez (sub Coconut Cream)
  • 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • Garnish: Tiki Paddle, freshly grated Nutmeg

Combine ingredients over ice and short shake like a rocket. Strain into Tiki mug over crushed ice. Grate nutmeg on top and garnish with Tiki Paddle.

In my opinion, it’s always time for a Tiki drink. No matter how crappy the weather may be, or how dark it is outside, I am always going to say, “OH HELL YAS” to some tropical Rum magic.

Today’s magic comes to us in the form of a Tiger Shark variation called Shark Reef. I started with Denizen Merchant’s Reserve, added Hamilton 151, some tasty syrups, Lime juice, and Pineapple Juice. Refrescando!

For real though, these two Rums make one hell of a split base. Note to self, make as many Tiki drinks with this combo as possible!

Shark Reef

  • 1 1/4 oz Denizen Merchant’s Reserve Rum
  • 3/4 oz Hamilton Demerara 151 Rum
  • 3/4 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz Cane Sugar Syrup (1:1)
  • 2 barspoons Cinnamon Bark Syrup
  • 8 oz Crushed ice
  • Garnish: Pineapple shark tooth, two Paddles to escape from the Sharks!

Combine ingredients in blender and blend for around 8 seconds. Pour into double Rocks glass or Tiki mug and garnish.
