Brazilian Surf Girl

Brazilian-Surf-Girl-1

Y’all, it’s January 31st and that means it’s last day of Tiki The Snow Away!

What a party! Wasn’t that fun? I had so much fun and to all of you who made tropical drinks I say, “There is no party like a worldwide Tiki party!”  Check the hashtag #TikiTheSnowAway on Instagram to see everyone’s awesome drinks.

Brazilian-Surf-Girl-2

This also means it’s time for the 3rd Surf Girl variation, Brazilian Surf Girl with Yaguara Cachaça.

Brazilian-Surf-Girl-3

Here are your cast of characters: Yaguara Cachaça, Surf Girl Trio of Denizen Aged White Rum, Senior Blue Curaçao, Coco Lopez, Velvet Falernum, Piña, and Lime.

Brazilian-Surf-Girl-6

But now for a deeper dive cause hot damn, these three go together so well!

  1. Yaguara Cachaça: as previously stated, I’m head over heels for this stuff. As far as Surf Girl goes, those tropical fruit, coconut, banana, and grassy/funky notes in the Cachaça just kill it with the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Denizen Aged White Rum: Yaguara goes so well with the banana & grassy/funky notes in Denizen! Synergy!
  3. Falernum: dude, these three ingredients are magic together! SERIOUSLY MAGIC. The spiced vanilla and lime notes + two sets of Banana, grasses, funk, strawberries.

Brazilian-Surf-Girl-4

Brazilian Surf Girl

  • 1 1/2 oz Yaguara Cachaça
  • 1 oz Denizen Aged White Rum

  • 1/2 oz Coco Lopez
  • 3/4 oz Velvet Falernum
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice
  • 3/4 oz Lime Juice
  • ~6 oz Crushed Ice
  • Garnish: Tiki umbrella, Maraschino cherry, Pineapple

Combine ingredients and blend for 7 seconds. Pour in a 10 oz Surf Girl Tiki Mug and garnish.

Brazilian-Surf-Girl-5

Surf on y’all and I hope your Tiki The Snow Away was totally tubluar. Dude.

Hawaiian Surf Girl

Hawaiian-Surf-Girl-2

Two days left of Tiki The Snow Away means two more Surf Girls! Hawaiian Suf Girl is near and dear to my heart as it adds some extra tropical goodness to mix.

If you want to share a tropical drink during the month of January, you have two days left to use the hashtag #TikiTheSnowAway on Instagram and Twitter, or tag u/homebargirl on reddit.

Hawaiian-Surf-Girl-4

This gurl has been surfing for days. Look at her tan!

Hawaiian-Surf-Girl-3

To the Surf Girl trio of Denizen Aged White, Senior Blue Curaçao, and Coco Lopez we add Passion fruit! Yea! It really adds a unique tartness in a way that Lime alone just can’t achieve. Lastly, Pineapple gives a great backbone and plays so well with the rest of the ingredients.

Hawaiian-Surf-Girl-1

Hawaiian Surf Girl

  • 2 oz Denizen Aged White Rum
  • 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 1/2 oz Coconut Cream
  • 1 oz Pineapple Juice*
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz Passion Fruit Syrup
  • ~8 oz Crushed Ice
  • Garnish: Tiki umbrella, Maraschino cherry, pineapple

Combine ingredients and blend for 7 seconds. Pour in a 10 oz Surf Girl Tiki Mug and garnish.

*Always unsweetned, 100% Pineapple Juice not from concentrate. This is critical or the drink will be too sweet.

Hawaiian-Surf-Girl-5

Yummmmm. Surf’s Up!

Cali Surf Girl

Cali-Surf-Girl-2

Y’ALL! I LITERALLY just realized that there’s only three days left of Tiki The Snow Away 2016! I have three Surf Girl variations, so we’re just gonna go on a lil marathon and I’ll post one for each day. We’ll start with Cali Surf Girl cause I’m a Cali gurrrrrrrrl.

If you want to share a tropical drink during the month of January, use the hashtag #TikiTheSnowAway on Instagram and Twitter, or tag u/homebargirl on reddit.

Cali-Surf-Girl-1

“I’m in love, I’m in love with a Surf Gurrrrrrl.”

Cali-Surf-Girl-3

Cast of Characters: Since this is a Cali Surf Girl, I decided to give it some Cali style ingredients like: Corralejo Tequila Blanco and Coconut Water. The Surf Girl trio of Denizen Aged White Rum, Blue Curaçao, and Coco Lopez remains intact and is joined by Lime Juice and a lil pink salt.

Cali-Surf-Girl-4

I’m also keeping the garnishes the same so as to have continuity between all the Surf Girl drinks.

Oh and plug your blender in and grab a bunch of ice!

Cali Surf Girl

  • 1 1/2 oz Blanco Tequila
  • 1 oz Denizen Aged White Rum
  • 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 3/4 oz Lime Juice
  • 3/4 oz Coconut Water
  • 1/2 oz Coconut Cream
  • Pinch of Salt
  • * 1/4 oz Simple Syrup
  • ~8 oz Crushed Ice
  • Garnish: Tiki umbrella, Maraschino Cherry, Pineapple

Combine ingredients and blend for 7 seconds. Pour in a 10 oz Surf Girl Tiki Mug and garnish.

*You may or may not want this. You’re working with a lot of ice and typically have to make blended drinks sweeter than shaken or stirred drinks.

Cali-Surf-Girl-5

Cheers to all y’all and all y’alls friends and all y’alls parties! Speaking of parties, we’re having a Tiki The Snow Away party in Brooklyn on Feb 4th! If you’re in town, stop by cause there will be a Surf Girl waiting for you!

Surf Girl

Surf-Girl-6

Happy Monday to y’all! I feel like I’m about to give birth to a cocktail baby cause I’ve been working on this set of drinks for so long! Pumped for two reasons today:

  1. We’re over 1/2 way through Tiki The Snow Away and guess what y’all? We just had our first snow in Brooklyn. PHEWWWWWW, I was getting nervous that there would be no snow to Tiki Away!
  2. Surf Girl. I’ve been working on this set of cocktails for a long time now and am finally ready to share them with y’all. Grab your boards, the above ingredients and a Surf Girl Tiki mug!

If you want to share a tropical drink during the month of January, use the hashtag #TikiTheSnowAway on Instagram and Twitter, or tag u/homebargirl on reddit.

Surf-Girl-3

As you can probably tell, Surf Girl the drink is inspired entirely by Surf Girl the Tiki mug. I found these two vintage beauties awhile ago and knew I had to make a concept drink with them.

Look how serene and majestic these Surf Girls look riding those unending waves. Look at their fish friends!

Surf-Girl-2

To me there were a couple of goals for this concept drink:

  1. Make a drink worthy of and consistent with the mug: this meant that the drink had to be blue and foamy so the top of the drink would look like a cresting wave.
  2. Make it tropical and delicious: It’s no secret that  Denizen Aged White Rum is my favorite white Rum. I have used it consistently for a while now and truly love all of the banana, tropical fruits, and hints of funk that it offers. With Denizen White in place, I wanted to build a set of ingredients that compliment the base spirit.
  3. Therefore, my base trio for all Surf Girl drinks is Denizen Aged White Rum, Senior Blue Curaçao (only the good stuff!), and Coco Lopez.

Surf-Girl-4

If you note the texture of the drink, it’s blended and this is crucial to achieving the overall effect of a Surf Girl on the wavvves. I’m also keeping all of the garnishes the same for each Surf Girl variation to achieve a cohesive line of Tiki drinks.

Surf-Girl-5

Here are your cast of characters: to the Surf Girl trio we add Smith & Cross Navy Strength Jamaica Rum, Pineapple Juice, and Lime Juice.

Surf-Girl-1

I mean damn, right? Doesn’t this mug deserve a line of concept drinks?

Surf Girl

  • 1 1/2 oz Denizen White Rum
  • 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 1/2 oz Smith & Cross Navy Strength Jamaican Rum
  • 3/4 oz Pineapple Juice*
  • 1/2 oz Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz Coconut Cream
  • ~8 oz Crushed Ice*
  • Garnish: Tiki umbrella, Maraschino Cherry, Pineapple chunk

Combine ingredients and blend for around 7 seconds. Pour in a 10 oz Surf Girl Tiki Mug and garnish.

*I think I have stated this before (or it’s generally understood in the Tiki world) but it’s critical that you use unsweetened, nothing added, just straight-up Pineapple juice. I like Lakewood Pineapple cause it’s literally juiced Pineapple.

**Amount is approximate cause I don’t have crushed ice. I crack all my ice from cubes and the shards might be a bit larger than yours if you’re using a crushed ice machine.

Surf-Girl-7

Maybe it’s the Cali beach girl within but I am FEEEEEELING this.

Cheers to you and all your party people during Tiki The Snow Away!

4th of July Daiquiri Party: Blue Daiquiri No. 2

Blue-Daiquiri-No-2-1

The 4th of July Daiquiri Party is in full swing on Instagram! If you want to submit a photo and recipe, use the hashtag #4thofJulyDaiquiriParty!

Blue-Daiquiri-No-2-2

Today’s Daiquiri is a Blue take on the classic Daiquiri No. 2 from the famous La Floridita Bar in Cuba. I love this Daiquiri, it’s supremely bright and refreshing with nice Orange flavours. I’m literally just subbing the Blue Curaçao for clear Curaçao, so there isn’t much variation here. The blue colour does make me want to get on a plane and go to a tropical island though!

Blue Daiquiri No. 2

  • 2 oz Denizen Aged White Rum
  • Barspoon Senior Blue Curaçao
  • 3/4 oz fresh Lime Juice
  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
  • Barspoon fresh Orange Juice
  • Garnish: Orange wedge

Combine ingredients over ice and shake like a rocket! Strain into chilled coupe. Garnish with Orange wedge.

Blue-Daiquiri-No-2-3

Cheers to all of us on this 4th of July Holiday weekend!

Drinking with Mad Men Season 7: Tiki Cocktails

Mad-Men-Tropical-1

Blue Hawaii & Mai Tai

To celebrate “The End of An Era”, welcome to a series of drinks from the television show Mad Men. Each week I’ll be featuring different cocktails from the show, so we can all drink along with our favourite Madison Avenue Ad-men and women.

By now, y’all should know that my love for Mad Men is deeeeep. It’s a meticulously filmed show with fabulous fashion, the story has me in the grip, and the cocktails are beauuuuutiful!

Mad Men Megan Blue Hawaii 1

Don’t you just love Megan’s hat? Beach hat perfection!

In the opening scenes of S6E1, Don and Megan are in Hawaii. (I want to be in Hawaii RIGHT NOW!) As Don reads an incredibly ominous passage from Dante’s Inferno, Megan’s second (third, fourth?) Blue Hawaii is delivered by one of the Hotel Staff. It’s almost like Don and Megan are in totally opposite worlds in these scenes. She, lost in her tan and tropical cocktails, Don in a brooding haze.

If I had to choose between those two temperments, I would totally be #TeamMegan in this scene. Give me the next Blue Hawaii!

Blue-Hawaii-1

When it comes to making classic Tropical and Tiki drinks, I like to be accurate! I use the Beachbum Berry Total Tiki app to look up recipes and then make them as closely to the original as possible. Blue Hawaii was created in 1957 by Harry K Yee of the Hawaiian Village Hotel in Waikiki to promote Bols Blue Curaçao. Personally, I like to use “The Genuine” Senior Curaçao cause this shit is tastyyyyyy.

Blue-Hawaii-2

Blue Hawaii

  • 3/4 oz White Rum
  • 3/4 oz Vodka*
  • 1/2 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 1 oz Sweet & Sour Mix**
  • 3 oz Pineapple Juice
  • Garnish: Not specified but usually Pineapple & Maraschino Cherry

Shake ingredients over ice and strain into a glass filled with Cracked, Crushed or Pebble ice. Garnish with fruit.

*I’m a Gin Gal and ususally swap the Vodka for Gin. Ginny, Gin, Gin. This drink is even tastier with Gin. (shocking!)

**Sweet & Sour Mix is 1 part Simple Syrup and 2 Parts Lemon Juice. Make your own, never ever buy it pre-made. Freshness is key.

Rachel Menken Mai Tai

RIP Rachel Menken, you were such a serious lady.

Now let’s go back to the beginning. Yes y’all, there is a Tiki drink all the way back in S1E1!

Don has made a mess of things with Rachel Menken and is asked by the partners to patch things up. They go for drinks that same evening. Don orders a Whiskey Neat while Rachel orders a “special Mai Tai” and what a Mai Tai at that! Look at that Pineapple “Firebird” garnish! It’s totally fabulous! Someday I will achieve such garnish greatness. However, I’ve noticed that the Mad Men props people forgot one key element to a Mai Tai garnish, the Mint sprig.

Mai-Tai-1

If it be a Mai Tai, there shall be a Mint Sprig in the garnish!

Once again, I’ve referenced the Beachbum Berry Total Tiki app for this Mai Tai. The original Mai Tai was created by Trader Vic in 1944 for his famous Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California. According to legend, Trader Vic created the drink for some friends of his who had just flown in from Tahiti. One of the friends tasted the drink and exclaimed: “Maita’i roa ae!” or “Out of this world!”

Mai Tai (Trader Vic’s Original Recipe)

  • 1 oz Jamaican Rum
  • 1 oz Aged Martinique Rhum
  • 1/2 oz Curaçao
  • 1/4 oz Orgeat
  • 1/4 oz Simple Syrup
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • Garnish: Mint Sprig

Now, I’ve had to make some substitutions because I don’t have clear Curaçao or Martinique Rhum. I also would rather have a bit more Orgeat in my drink than add 1/4 oz Simple Syrup.

Mai Tai (this is what Home Bar Girl has in her apartment Recipe)

  • 1 oz Smith & Cross Navy Strength Jamaica Rum
  • 1 oz Denizen Aged White Rum
  • 1/2 oz Cointreau Triple Sec
  • 1/2 oz Orgeat
  • 1 oz Lime Juice
  • Garnish: Mint Sprig, Pineapple, Maraschino Cherry

Shake ingredients over ice and strain into Double Rocks glass on Cracked, Crushed or Pebble ice. Garnish with Mint Sprig, Pineapple and Maraschino Cherry.

Mai-Tai-2

As far as the Mai Tai goes, there are a million variations so, have fun! I just recommend that you start with two kinds of Rum, some kind of Curaçao or Triple Sec, Orgeat, Lime Juice and a Mint sprig. Once you’ve got a feel for how these things taste together, get creative!

Well, I hope you’ve enjoyed these Tiki drinks from the Mad Men series. I’ll be doing this until the bitter end. See you next week!

MxMo + An English Sailor

An-English-Sailor-1

You guys, worlds have collided! It turns out that the Mixology Monday theme for the month of January is BLUE! It’s like I don’t even need an excuse to keep going with #TikiTheSnowAway. Tiki is everywhere. Tiki is omnipresent. Tiki IS.

Blue MxMo Logo

MxMo is a monthly cocktail party with a theme. They give the theme, then we cocktail bloggers post our drinks to fit this theme. This months’ boistrously Blue theme is being hosted by Andrea over at GinHound and she is using Blue in two ways:  “melancholy” or “Tiki”. Obvi, I’m going with Tiki.

ALSO: why has no one made a Blue Monday joke here? Seriously. Such a great opportunity.

An English Sailor

  • 2 oz Hayman’s Old Tom Gin
  • 3/4 oz Senior Blue Curaçao
  • 1/4 oz Luxardo Maraschino Cherry Liqueur
  • 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1 dash of Orange Bitters
  • Garnish: Lemon peel and Maraschino Cherry flag

In container, combine ingredients over ice and shake baby shake. Strain into coupe, garnish with Lemon peel and Cherry flag.

An-English-Sailor-2

What fun! This is my first time to participate in MxMo and I’m looking forward to more challenges! Have the best Blue Monday ever, y’all. 🙂
